Slip-on flanges, also known as 'hubbed flanges', have a hub with a very low profile. This type of flange is usually connected to a pipe by one or two fillet welds (one outside the flange and one inside the flange), it is however possible to use only a single weld.

A slip-on flange is a type of flange that is designed to slip over the end of a pipe and then welded in place. It is typically used in applications where easy assembly and disassembly of the piping system are required. Slip-on flanges are among the most common types of flanges used in various industries, including oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, and power generation.

Design and Construction: Slip-on flanges have a bored-out center, allowing the pipe to slip through the flange. They are typically made from materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel, depending on the application and environmental conditions.

Ease of Installation: One of the main advantages of slip-on flanges is their ease of installation. The flange can be easily slipped over the pipe end, and then it is welded in place. This simplifies the assembly and disassembly of the piping system.

Welding: Slip-on flanges are attached to the pipe by welding the inner and outer diameter of the flange to the pipe. The welding provides strength and ensures a secure connection.

Facing Options: The flange face can be raised face (RF), flat face (FF), or ring type joint (RTJ), depending on the application and sealing requirements.

Applications: Slip-on flanges are commonly used in low-pressure and non-critical applications. They are suitable for systems where frequent disassembly is required, as they facilitate easy removal and reassembly of the pipe.

Cost-effective: Slip-on flanges are generally more cost-effective than some other types of flanges.

Easy to align and weld: The design simplifies the alignment of the flange with the pipe, making the welding process straightforward.

Limitations: Not suitable for high-pressure or high-temperature applications: Due to the welding method and the design, slip-on flanges may not be the best choice for systems with high pressures or temperatures.

Slip-on flanges offer a practical solution for applications where ease of assembly and disassembly is important, and where the operating conditions do not require the use of more specialized flange types.

What is a slip-on flange?

Slip-on flanges, also known as 'hubbed flanges', include a low-profile hub. This sort of flange is often linked to a pipe with one or two fillet welds (one outside and one inside the flange), however it is possible to utilise only one weld. Slip-on flanges are available in several diameters and are ideal for lower pressure applications (ASME class 600).

A slip-on flange has a bigger bore (internal diameter) than the connected pipe, allowing it to slide/slip onto the pipe. There is no full penetration weld between the pipe and the flange, hence its use is limited due to poor weld integrity.

Features of Slip-on flanges

These are flanges available at less cost. They have a low hub as pipe slips into the flange before performing welding. These slip-on flanges are easy to align welded, both internally and externally.

Types of Slip-on flanges

Slip-on flanges are classified into three types: the Slip-On Reducing Flange, the Raised Face Slip-On Flange, and the RTJ Slip-On Flange. The flange is useful for lowering line size and limiting space limits. These flanges are compatible with the weld neck flange and reducer combo. They are important for directing flow from smaller to larger sizes. Slip-on flanges are welded both inside and externally. Welding gives them the capacity to prevent leaks while still providing appropriate strength.
