What is a Long Weld Neck Flanges?

Mostly used in ASME Pressure Vessel applications, a long weld neck flange is an inherent self-reinforcing flange connection. In order to provide a bolt-up connection to the vessel, the Long Weld Neck (LWN) Flange was created to replace the Weld Neck Flange and pipe. With this design, the neck's stress was shifted to the base, where it was attached to the vessel, reducing it there.

The most popular self-reinforced nozzle design is the Long Weld Neck Flange. For applications requiring higher pressure and temperature, the thicker neck of the heavy barrel style nozzles is available. For pipe sizes ½" to 24" and 26" to 60", ASME B16.47 and ASME B16.5, respectively, are the design specifications for the flange end and sealing face. The length of the neck is usually proportional to the nominal size and pressure. The usual barrel lengths for the LWN Flange are9",12", and16", but they can be customised to the customer's specifications.
