What is a Ring Type Joint?
The Ring Type Joint, or RTJ, is the type of gasket required for the flange. The Ring Type Joint was created for the petroleum and petrochemical sectors, where higher pressures and temperatures exist. The sealing surface is a high tolerance groove carved into the face of the Flange, having a maximum finish of 63 RMS. When the bolts are torqued down, the RTJ ring compresses into the groove of the flanges, forming a seal.
Ring Type Joint gaskets are compatible with flanges made to ANSI B16.5, ASME B16.47 Series A, and API 6A standards. They are produced in accordance with ASME B16.20 standards.
Using an RTJ flange and ring provides the advantage of limiting the gasket to a groove with two sealing surfaces. When the bolts are tightened, the groove makes sure the ring centres itself. For these kinds of flanges, an increase in process pressure causes an increase in sealing pressure.
The grooves on RTJ flanges have the potential to gather moisture or dirt when the flange is open, which is a drawback. For the right seal to be formed, the grooves and ring gaskets must be precisely aligned. Throughout the operation cycle, the seal needs to be kept in place.
The R Type, RX Type, and BX Type are the three types of gasket designs for ring type joints. The most popular R Type comes in two distinct profiles: oval and octagonal. The initial design was the oval type, which had an oval-shaped groove drilled into the face of the flange. Due to its superior sealing performance over the oval design, the octagonal RTJ is the most widely used. The groove design is the same for the octagonal gaskets R and RX.
