What is a RTJ Flanges?
Pipeline applications involving high pressure and/or high temperature are intended for the Ring Type Joint (RTJ) flange. Because of this, they are the necessary standard for flanges in API specifications.
High integrity pressure vessel couplings, pipework assemblies, and oil field valves are a few examples of applications.
They use a gasket under compression to provide a secure junction, just like conventional flanges. But there are a few ways in which an RTJ flange is different from the more typical flat and raised face flange.
- The gasket used is a steel ring – instead of the flat composite material type.
- An RTJ flange has a groove machined into the flange surface to accept the gasket.
- When the gasket deforms it creates a metal-to-metal seal.
- Under compression, the softer metal of the gasket flows into the microfine structure of the harder flange material.
- The raised faces of connected and tightened RTJ flanges may be in contact with each other. When this happens, the compressed gasket will not bear any extra load. The benefit is the integrity of the joint will be protected from over-tightening, vibration, and movement.
RTJ Gasket Types
The R Type, RX Type, and BX Type are the three types of gasket designs for ring type joints. The most popular R Type comes in two distinct profiles: oval and octagonal. The initial design was the oval type, which had an oval-shaped groove drilled into the face of the flange. Due to its superior sealing performance over the oval design, the octagonal RTJ is the most widely used. The groove design is the same for the octagonal gaskets R and RX. The RX works best in situations where there is vibration and shock loading because it is made for higher pressures up to 5000 psi. The BX Type gasket is suitable for pressure ratings up to and should only be used in API 6BX Type Flanges.
