A blind flange is a solid disk used to block off a pipeline or to create a stop. Similar to a regular flange, a blind flange has mounting holes around the perimeter and the gasket sealing rings are machined into the mating surface. The difference is that a blind flange has no opening for fluids to pass through.

Blind flanges are an essential component in piping systems and industrial applications, serving specific purposes within pipelines. A blind flange is a solid disk with no bore (inner opening) and is used to close the end of a pipe, valve, or pressure vessel. It effectively blocks the flow of fluid or gas, providing a secure closure for the system.

Purpose and Functionality: Blind flanges are employed to seal the end of a pipe or to close off a vessel or pipeline temporarily. They are commonly used during maintenance, cleaning, or inspection procedures when it is necessary to isolate a section of the pipeline.

Design and Construction: Blind flanges are typically circular and feature bolt holes around the perimeter, allowing them to be securely fastened to the adjoining pipe or equipment using bolts. The absence of a bore in the blind flange distinguishes it from other types of flanges.

Material Selection: Blind flanges, like other types of flanges, are available in various materials to suit the specific requirements of the application. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and other metals.

Pressure Ratings: Blind flanges come in different pressure classes to accommodate varying pressure requirements in different piping systems. The pressure class is determined by factors such as the material and thickness of the flange.

Sizes and Standards: Blind flanges are manufactured in a range of sizes to match the dimensions of the pipes they are intended to close. Standard sizes are determined by industry norms and specifications. Various international standards, such as ASME, ASTM, and DIN, provide guidelines for the design, dimensions, and materials of blind flanges.

Installation and Maintenance: Installing a blind flange involves aligning the bolt holes with those of the adjoining pipe or equipment and securing it in place with bolts. Gaskets may be used to ensure a proper seal. Routine inspection and maintenance of blind flanges are crucial to ensure their integrity and prevent potential leaks.

What is a Blind Flange?

A blind flange is a solid flange, as illustrated below. These are used to seal off unused piping or nozzles in a vessel. A nozzle is a flanged pipe that exits a vessel and connects to valves or other pipes. A nozzle may be blanked out with a blind flange for pressure tests at a plant or if the customer does not require all the nozzles provided on the tank.

The ideal practice is to use a normal gasket for these blinds. Blind flanges, like conventional pipe flanges, can have raised faces (RF) or flat faces (FF). For RF flanges, we recommend using a regular ring gasket suitable for service or testing. If the flange is FF, a full face gasket is typically used as it is not designed to withstand bending pressures caused by ring gaskets or RF flanges against it. Again, we handle a blind flange similarly to any other pipe flange.

Where to Use

The blind flange's main role is to completely isolate the production medium. This prevents the shut-off valve from closing properly, affecting production and perhaps causing accidents.

The blind flange should be placed at the site that requires isolation, such as the equipment nozzle. A figure 8 blind flange (figure-8 blank) is frequently recommended between the front and back of the shut-off valve or between the two flanges; for single-use items such as pressing and purging, a common circular blind flange is typically used.

Sealing Surface

There are various types of sealing surfaces, including flat, convex, concave and convex, grooved, and ring joint surfaces.

Manufacturing Types and Costs

In general, there are four types: forging, casting and forging, medium plate cutting, and casting. Forging products are the most expensive, middle plate are the second, casting and forging are the cheapest, and casting is the poorest method when compared to others.

Forging and medium plate have the highest quality, whereas casting and forging are slightly lower grade.

Casting Blind Flanges

The casting flange blank has an exact shape, a modest processing capacity, and a low cost, but it has casting flaws (air hole crack inclusions). Furthermore, the internal casting section has a poor streamlining.

Forging Blind Flange

Forged blind flanges often have lower carbon content than cast flanges and are less prone to rust. Forgings have a more streamlined design, denser structure, and superior mechanical qualities than cast flanges;
If the forging process is wrong, the grain will be big or uneven, resulting in a hardening crack. The forging cost is higher than the casting flange.
Forgings can endure more shear and tensile forces than castings.
