What is Loose Flange? The Loose flange types to fit elbows, valves and nearly every type of pipeline component in use. The Loose flange is a device that is welded onto the end of a piece of pipe to create half of a flanged coupling.
Loose flanges, also known as lap joint flanges, are a type of flange used in piping systems to connect pipes, valves, and other equipment. Unlike other types of flanges that are designed to be welded or screwed onto the pipe, loose flanges are not welded directly to the pipe itself. Instead, they are typically used in conjunction with stub ends.

Two-Part Assembly: Loose flanges consist of two separate parts – the stub end and the actual loose flange. The stub end is welded to the pipe, and the loose flange is then slipped over the stub end.
Non-Restrictive Movement: One of the primary advantages of using loose flanges is that they allow for some rotational movement. This is beneficial in applications where alignment adjustments might be needed. The loose flange can rotate around the stub end, providing flexibility in the piping system.
Easy Alignment: Loose flanges are particularly useful when alignment of bolt holes is critical. Since the loose flange is not rigidly attached to the pipe, it can be adjusted easily to align with the bolt holes of the mating flange.
Cost-Effective: Loose flanges can be more cost-effective than other types of flanges, especially in applications where frequent disassembly and reassembly are required. The stub end, once welded to the pipe, can remain in place while the loose flange can be easily removed and replaced.
Applications: Loose flanges are commonly used in low-pressure applications where welding is not a requirement. They are suitable for systems that involve frequent assembly and disassembly, such as in temporary piping structures or systems that require regular maintenance.
It's important to note that loose flanges are not recommended for high-pressure or high-temperature applications, as they may not provide the same level of structural integrity as fully welded flanges. Additionally, gaskets are typically required between the faces of the loose flange and the mating flange to ensure a proper seal in the joint.
Loose flanges offer flexibility and ease of assembly in piping systems, making them a practical choice for certain applications where adjustability and cost-effectiveness are key considerations.

What is a Loose Flanges?
A Lap Joint Flange (Loose Flange) is a device made up of two parts that resemble a weld neck flange and are butt welded to the pipes, much like a loose slip-on flange. The first component of the lap joint flange is a sleeve known as a "Stub-end" that resembles a short length of pipe with a butt weld end, also known as the hub, on one end and a thin shoulder on the other. The pipe for connection determines the diameter and thickness of the narrow shoulder parameters, which are similar to the rase face of the flange and the butt weld end of the stub-end, which is similar to the neck of the weld neck flange. The hub and sleeve are joined by a rounded transition on the hub's back face. The backing flange is the additional component of a lap joint flange. The specifications of the backing flange are the same as those of other common flanges (O.D., PCD, bolt hole, etc.), but it lacks a raised face (the stub end has a raised face). The rear of the lap joint flange, or one side, has a square-cut centre or pipe hole with a small shoulder on it. The front side features a flat face with an outside fillet matching the fillet of the "Stub-end" piece at the centre hole. The Lap-joint flange assembly's flange portion is slid onto the stub-end before the sleeve is welded to the pipe or fitting to make the connection. The flange is not fastened or welded in any way.
Loose Flanges Uses
The most typical application for loose flanges is joining two sections of pipe. Plumbing systems, both home and commercial, frequently operate in this manner. In pressure vessels, boilers, and other applications where two pieces of metal need to be bonded securely, loose flanges are also useful. It is crucial to remember that these kinds of connections should only be made with the assistance of a trained expert because a bad connection could result in hazardous leaks or other major problems.
Loose Flanges Welding
It is frequently required to weld loose flanges together during the installation procedure. The most popular method for welding a loose flange is inert tungsten gas, or TIG, welding. Tungsten electrodes are heated during the welding process by an electric current flowing across them. The metal surrounding the electrodes melts as they heat up, securely joining the two sections. TIG welding creates robust connections between metal surfaces that are impervious to high temperatures and pressures.
Loose Flanges Types
Nowadays, there are numerous varieties of loose flanges on the market. Lap joint stub ends, threaded flanges and slip-on flanges are a few examples. While threaded flanges have threads cut into them for simple installation with nuts and bolts, slip-on flanges feature raised faces with grooves that enable for easy installation onto pipes or pipe fittings. When joining two pipes, lap joint stub ends offer extra support because they fit into one another like jigsaw pieces and create a strong bond without the need for welding or other specialist equipment or methods.
