A lap-joint flange is a two-component assembly, with a stub end that has a lap-joint ring flange placed over it. The stub end is then butt welded to the pipe, and the flange ring can be rotated to align with the mating flange. This type of flange connection is particularly useful for large or hard-to-adjust flanges.
Lapped joint flanges are a type of pipe flange used in piping systems to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment. They are designed to allow easy assembly and disassembly of the piping components, making maintenance and repairs more convenient. Here's an introduction to lapped joint flanges.

Lapped Joint Flanges Exporter
Manufacturer and Exporter of Lapped Joint Flanges in Dimension accordance with ANSI/ASME B16.5, B 16.47 Series A & B, B16.48, BS4504, BS 10, EN-1092-1, DIN, etc. Certified with NACE, PWHT, HIC, SSC, Magnetic Particle Test, Dye Penereteration Test etc.
1. Basic Design
- Lapped joint flanges consist of two main components: a stub end and a backing flange.
- The stub end is welded to the pipe, and the backing flange is usually free to rotate around the stub end.
- The joint between the stub end and the backing flange is typically made by lap joint facing, where the stub end extends slightly beyond the backing flange.
2. Assembly and Disassembly
- One of the key features of lapped joint flanges is their ease of assembly and disassembly.
- The stub end and backing flange can be easily separated, facilitating quick removal or replacement of components without disturbing the rest of the piping system.
3. Advantages
- Easy assembly and disassembly, reducing downtime during maintenance.
- The rotation of the backing flange allows for proper alignment during installation.
- Cost-effective solution for applications that require frequent disassembly.
4. Limitations
- Lapped joint flanges may not be suitable for high-pressure or high-temperature applications where a fully welded joint is necessary.
- The rotating backing flange may pose challenges in certain situations, and proper alignment is crucial.
5. Standardization
- Lapped joint flanges are manufactured according to various industry standards such as ANSI, ASME, DIN, and others, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability with other components in the piping system.
- lapped joint flanges provide a flexible and cost-effective solution for applications that require frequent maintenance and easy disassembly. Their design allows for efficient installation and removal of components in a piping system, making them a popular choice in certain industrial settings.

What is a Lapped Joint Flanges Flange?
A lap joint flange (LJF) is made up of two elements: a stub end and a lap joint ring flange (also known as a "lap joint flange"). To be technically correct, the stub end does not form part of the lap joint flange. A lap joint flange is always used in conjunction with a stub end, hence the two elements are frequently referred to as a 'lap joint flange'.
Because of its design, lap joint flanges always have a flat face and a smooth surface. However, when paired with the stub end, the resulting sealing face is elevated. This occurs because the stub end's sealing face is above the flange's bolting plane.
The lap joint flange lacks a sealing face, whereas the stub end does.
A stub end's sealing face might be plain, serrated, or grooved to accommodate a ring joint.
Benefits of using Ring Lap Joint Flange
- Compatible with regular dismantling. You may easily and often remove the pipe for inspection and cleaning.
- Flanges may be easily rotated and bolt holes aligned, making assembly of big diameter or exceptionally rigid pipes easier.
- Cost savings. Whether the pipe material is alloy steel or stainless steel. When employing a lap flange, the wetting material is made of a specific material, and the flange is carbon steel. The flange is unaffected by the process fluid because it is not in touch with it.
- Rescue. In systems that are rapidly corroded or rusted, the flange can be recycled for reuse.
