Purpose and Application: ASME SA/A672 pipes are primarily designed for use in high-pressure applications where elevated temperatures are involved. These pipes are used in industries such as power generation, petrochemical, chemical processing, and other applications where high-pressure transportation of fluids is required.

Material: These pipes are typically made from low carbon or low-alloy steel materials. The choice of material depends on the specific requirements of the application, including temperature, pressure, and corrosion resistance.

Manufacturing Process: ASME SA/A672 pipes are manufactured using the electric-fusion-welding process, which involves melting the edges of the steel plates or coils and then fusing them together using an electric arc. This process ensures strong, durable, and reliable welds.

Size and Dimensions: The specification covers a range of pipe sizes and dimensions, including different wall thicknesses and diameters, to accommodate various industrial requirements.

Grades and Classes: ASME SA/A672 pipes are classified into different grades and classes based on their mechanical properties and intended use. These grades and classes help in selecting the appropriate pipe for a specific application.

Testing and Inspection: The specification also outlines rigorous testing and inspection requirements to ensure the quality and integrity of the pipes. These tests may include hydrostatic testing, non-destructive testing (such as radiographic or ultrasonic examination), and mechanical property testing.

Compliance: ASME SA/A672 pipes must comply with the standards and specifications outlined in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). Compliance ensures that the pipes meet the necessary safety and quality standards.

End Connections: These pipes may have various types of end connections, such as plain ends, beveled ends, or threaded ends, depending on the application and the joining method required.

ASME SA/A672 pipes are designed to meet the stringent requirements of high-pressure, moderate-temperature applications in various industries. They are manufactured using electric-fusion welding techniques, tested thoroughly, and classified into different grades to suit specific needs. These pipes play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of fluids in industrial settings.

Scope

This specification covers steel pipe 16 inches in outside diameter or larger that is electric fusion welded (EFW) with filler metal added, fabricated from pressure vessel quality plate and suitable for high-pressure service at moderate temperatures. Several grades designate the type of plate used; classes designate the type of heat treatment performed during the manufacture of the pipe, whether the weld is radiographically examined, and if the pipe has been pressure tested.

Chemical composition

Product analysis of plate: The pipe manufacturer shall make an analysis of each mill heat of plate material. The product analysis shall meet the requirements of the plate specification to which the material was ordered.

Product analysis of weld: The pipe manufacturer shall make an analysis of the finished deposited weld material from each 500 feet or fraction thereof. Analysis shall conform to the welding procedure for deposited weld metal.

Heat treatment

Classes 10, 11, 12 and 13 are not heat treated. All other classes must be heat treated according to the parameters shown below:
